My Time With The M1 MacBook Air

I recently bit the bullet and decided to upgrade to a new M1 MacBook Air. I had been repping a 2009 MacBook Pro for far too long. I can’t say that I had any major issues with that MacBook Pro, but it was just too heavy, too hot, and had too little battery life. Do I miss the 17 inch screen? For sure. Do I miss anything else? Not yet.

In my time with the MacBook Air, my only complaint is possibly, and I mean possibly, the screen size. I’ve not actually run into any issues with my work flow while using it but it’s still something that is somewhat hanging over my head.

From a performance standpoint, it’s pure gold. I’ve not run into a single hiccup thus far. I in no way monitor my my application usage. As I type this article, I’ve 15 programs open. I’m playing 4K YouTube music videos in the background with about 12 tabs open between Safari and Chrome. I’m tabbing back in forth between Messages and Signal to avoid finishing this article. I’ve found zero instances where the laptop has not fully done what I’ve thrown at it.

In fact the most I’ve probably asked of it was for a 4k, 60fps, encode of a shitty attempt at Youtubing that my wife and I made. And don’t worry, the laptop performed admirably and I have no intention of unleashing the hell that that video was upon you.

Now before we go, I said that there is nothing that I have missed up to this point from my old laptop but I know that will change in time. The fact is, choosing these M1 Macs it a choice to give up any future ability of upgrading. Its not a choice that I took lightly when I made the leap but I’m not convinced that I won’t regret it in time. I guess we’ll have to see.
